You were never meant to be your own enemy. Hello Luminous Reader, Not in what my clients say, but in the energy beneath it. They’re not even aware they're doing it. Here's what's happening: When you've been hurt before - physically, emotionally, relationally - your nervous system learns to brace. It anticipates the blow. And sometimes, instead of waiting for someone else to deliver it, you do it to yourself first. You speak to yourself in ways you'd never speak to anyone else. You deny yourself rest. Joy. Love. Visibility. Support. Not because you don't deserve it. But because if you're the one doing it, at least you control when and how it happens. It's a coping mechanism. A way to stay safe when safety has felt conditional. "If I hurt myself first, maybe it won't hurt as much when someone else does." It reminds me of my brother when we were kids. My mom would threaten to take us outside ‘for a walk’ if we misbehaved at a restaurant. One time, instead of waiting for her to do it, he took himself out. Not only that, he punched himself in the face and gave himself a fat lip! When he came back in, everyone laughed. They may have found it funny, but when I feel into that moment now... that laughter was rooted in shock and disbelief. Even at such a young age, he'd found a way to control the outcome. But here's what happens over time: When you hurt yourself first to stay safe, the heart learns it's not safe to stay open. Not all at once, but slowly over time… almost imperceptibly. And when the heart closes, you stop receiving what you actually need. I see the opposite happen when the heart begins to stabilize open. “Bree brought me back to a place of pure openness… creative and unguarded without fear of being hurt. And I remember asking myself: why don't I live like this? That question was the moment everything shifted for me.” Opening the Heart isn't about forcing anything open. It's about creating enough safety - in your body, in your nervous system, in your life - that you don't need to protect yourself this way anymore. You were never meant to be your own enemy.
